One idea that doesn't QUITE match you description would be to check the "dust shield" in case it got accidentally bent in the process. The only difference is the tone wheel that's pressed on to the knuckle end of the axle. See Napa part numbers NMD 958395 & NMD 958399. The original broken axle had a larger diameter threaded section then the replacement and it used the staked nut. The replacement used a nylock nut. The replacement also had a copper bushing and the original axle didn't. I have been wrenching on my own rides most of 40 years and mech inclined. CV axles started going bad, I get in to check CV's and hear throw out bearing squeel. Call local garage that had rebuilt friend's WRX and ask about doing whole job. This has been a problem for others because after market axle makers just put the ABS relector ring on every axle regardless of if you have ABS or not. If this is the issue the problem is easily resolved by hammering the relector ring teeth flatter until they don't rub on the hub. This can be done without removing the axle.
